We left Sioux Falls at 8:00 and headed south on I29 into a 30-40mph headwind. Day 1 the drive was easy and got 10mpg but today was going to be tougher. The terrain in Nebraska and Kansas is much hillier and having to adjust for the wind gusts left my arms, neck and shoulders pretty tired. My MPG dropped to 7.7 making it tough on the pocket book as well. Sure are lots of corn fields down here. Scenery looks a lot like a drive across the Cdn prairies in Sept. Lots of flat, lots of rolling hills, not a lot of people.
We arrived in Topeka, KS at 4:00 and checked into the Hilltop Campground at a cost of $15.00 for full hookups. I have a Passport America membership which has member RV Parks all over the U.S. and you get a 50% reduction in the camping fee. We are finding that the Passport America parks are older with only basic amenities and appeal but for an overnight stay the price is right. We have also found that many of the residents are living there full time or seasonally. Some work construction or drive truck and go where there is work. Many of the trailers are older and pretty beat up. Some were skirting the bottom of their trailer with insulation for a winter stay. Got talking to one fellow and for a minute I thought I had run into Grizzly Adams. He had the beard and shaggy look but minus the bear.
It was 67 when we got here and the wind has dropped right off so it was nice for taking Charli for a walk. 9 hours yesterday and 8 hours today. I'm bagged. Finishing off my birthday bottle of wine (59 today, where has the time gone). Then it might be off to bed..
Sweet dreams.
Driving in any kind of winds is no fun when you're rv'ing it.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday and enjoy your bottle of wine!
