Going to Amarillo,Tx today which is only 258mi so we decided to sleep in a bit. Got up about 7:00, had a relaxing morning and took Charli on a long run in the neighbouring grounds of the old golf course.
The DAMM wind is blowing again. Another crosswind so more constant correcting of the wheel and watching for all those trucks that pass us. I'm only driving between 90-100kph and the truckers are going a lot faster and there are are a LOT of trucks. If a gust catches them or us at the wrong time our respective trailers can get pretty close.
We discovered that the Kilpatrick turnpike around Oklahoma City is a toll road. This I didn't know about. No problem if it's the same as the one in Kansas. Get on the toll road, take a ticket, get off the toll road and pay the nice lady at the window. Well that's not how they do it in Oklahoma. Here you drive up to the tool booth and have to read the sign to see how much you owe, fish for some change and throw it in a bin and drive away. Ok so we managed to find enough US change, barely. A few miles down the road, same routine. I think we short changed them. Third time we were exiting and we had no US change left and they don't want bills so we threw in a couple of Loonies and drove off. They will be surprised when they empty that machine. All this on camera so I won't be surprised when we get a ticket in the mail at home.
Arrived at the AOK Campground just outside Amarillo at 3:00 with a temp of 82. The name however, is misleading. Other than Cedar Valley in Guthrie the Passport America campgrounds seem to be code for a large field with some services and right next to the Interstate, train tracks or under the flight path from the airport. AOK had all 3. Not that there were absolutely no attractions. There was a fenced in area that housed a donkey, an Emu and 2 Lamas. I can not for the life of me figure out why this collection of animals are here. For $12.50 and a place to sleep next to other weary travellers I guess it's a fair trade off.
Us and a few other weary travellers |

Next to the CAMPER sign was the wildlife park, right next to the Interstate |
A few months back I installed a Progressive Industries Electrical Management System in the trailer which will detect electrical problems. After plugging in the trailer I got an E2 error message which means an open ground. Not surprising given the age and condition of the electrical boxes. Changed connections to the open campsite next to us and it was fine. Guess the cost of installing the EMS was worth it.
The drive from Ok to Tx is a lot of flat that extends forever followed by a lot of rolling hills that extend forever with no evidence of human inhabitants. Lots of cattle and huge feedlots. Saw our first Cotton and Sorghum fields. Lots of irrigation for the crop land as I don't think they get enough rainfall to support the crops otherwise.
Sometimes we wonder if we are driving the wrong way. We have seen a few RVs traveling south with us but we have seen many more in the Northbound lane. Not sure where there heading cause its cold up there.
Later.
