We got up at 6:30 this morning and were on the road by 8:30. Want to get to Oklahoma City today and with stops it will be a 7 hour drive. It was 460mi on day 1, 345mi on day 2 and 300mi planned today. Wanted to front load the mileage to get south of the cold weather and make time while my adrenaline was pumping. Being a driving team of 1 means if I get tired its time for a roadside snooze. The weather reports show the jet stream dropping south as far as Texas so it turns out it was good we left a few days early.
It was sunny, 45 with a cold gusting wind. This time from the north so the driving was much easier with the tailwind and mileage went up to as high to 13.4mpg. One disadvantage to this Ford is the small gas tank. 26 U.S. gallons. When your pulling a trailer you can almost watch the gas gauge drop. When we left the campground we had slightly more than 1/4 tank so we were on the lookout for a gas station. I knew we were going to be getting on to a toll road and gas stations would be limited but before you could say "running on empty" there was the toll booth and we had to hope a gas station would be close. Note to self. Buy a 5 Gal gas can to keep in the box.
As we watched the GPS for indications of upcoming gas stations we were down to 9 miles to empty on the trip computer. Finally a gas station and we put in 23 gallons. Obviously the trip computer provides a safety buffer of 2 gallons. Could have managed another 20 miles no problem. The rest of the day went without a hitch.
We pulled into Cedar Valley RV Park in Guthrie, OK, about 30 minutes north of Oklahoma City.
This is another Passport America campground ($15.00) and based on our previous experience we were expecting something less than appealing. What a surprise. This turned out to be a great park with level concrete parking pads. Very well maintained and filled with lots of travellers similar to us.
The park used to be surrounded by a Par 3 golf course. What is left is a large grassed and treed area, perfect for letting Charli run off some of her pent up energy. For the most part she travels well, laying on the back seat, looking totally bored and waiting for potty breaks to sniff out new adventures.
Are we there yet, are we, are we |
One thing we have noticed the past few days is no more Red River Gumbo. The soil is all red as evidenced by the hills of escavated soil in the background
During our drive through Guthrie we noticed lots of older houses, businesses and public buildings. Turns out Guthrie was the first capital of Oklahoma and they have preserved many of the historic buildings. We won't be able to tour the town but took some literature from the lady at the campground office and will make it a point to stop here for a few days the next time we pass by. Perhaps in April on our return.
We chatted with our neighbours who happen to be full timers. He is retired US Army and they sold their house about 6 years ago and have been traversing the US ever since. From travel blogs and online forums that I follow there are a great many retired servicemen that choose the Fulltime RV lifestyle. Perhaps it's all those years of being stationed in different locales around the world. Seems to me my vagabond Banking background might lend itself to this lifestyle as well. Now I just have to convince Lori.
Later.
