Newfoundland - Day 13 & 14

Our second last day in Newfoundland was spend mostly on the road.  After about 9 hours we arrived back in St. John's and checked into our historical Jellybean house. After settling in we were off to O’Reilly’s Irish Pub for dinner.

On this last day in Newfoundland I leave you with some shots of our neighbourhood.  The architecture and colour choices are nothing like what we see in Manitoba and despite the grey skies that followed us for much of our trip the colourful houses, majestic landscape and friendly people warmed our hearts. 

Apparently the reason for the brightly coloured houses was back in the day the only paint that would last through the harsh weather conditions was marine paint.  At the time marine paint was only available in primary colours.  The tradition lasts to this day.

Lori, Deb, Don and I arrived in St. John’s, Newfoundland on August 9th and covered a good portion of the north 1/2 of the island.  We put on over 2200 km travelling from St. John’s to Bonavista to Twillingate to Rocky Harbour and Gros Morne.  We had a great time.  Scenery was amazing and not cluttered with thousands of tourists like so many other places we have visited.  

 I would highly recommend coming to Newfoundland, it’s a beautiful province and the people we met were great as were our travel companions. 

Perhaps we will do it again. 

Newfoundland - Day 12

We extended our stay at Rocky Harbour by one day to allow us this last day for exploring Gros Morne National Park. We went on another boat tour of Western Brook Pond. It was a dull day, so pictures are kind of dark, but beautiful nonetheless.Tomorrow we head back to St. John’s, so a travel day of about 8-9 hours. Then we fly back home.

Newfoundland - Day 11

Today we drove to the Lookout Hill Trail, which was about 5.8kms, 2.8kms felt like it was straight up, coming down was so much easier. The views overlooked Gros Morne National Park and they were amazing!! We then went on a 4km hike of the Tablelands. The scenery was completely different than our first hike. One more day in Rocky Harbour, then back to St. John’s for the trip home.

It is actually the earths crust which was pushed
up to the surface a few million years ago. 
Nothing grows here.
