Day 2 saw us take a bus tour up to Grouse Mountain, a walk across the Capilano Suspension Bridge and a quick visit to a salmon and trout hatchery. Some interesting sights and when combined with our trip back to English Bay in the evening for a fieworks show we walked 14km. I'll show the fireworks in a separate post.
We walked from the B&B to the docks where the cruise ships embark which would be our destination the next day. Lots of glass and metal skyscrapers with a few old buildings scattered among them.
A shot of our ride to the top of Grouse Mountain. A 2.5 km hiking trail called the Grouse Grind is an option. We took the cable car.
Some of the handiwork of the chainsaw carvers. Very detailed.
We were walking along the trail and heard someone screaming. Looked up and saw the zip line. We passed on that bit of excitement as well. Heights and I are not compatible.
About 25 years ago a couple of grizzly cubs were rescued after their mother had been killed. They were raised with the intent of returning them to the wild but they became too accustomed to people. An enclosure was built for them and they have been residents of Grouse Mountain ever since.
A raptor exhibit was in progress with planned demonstrations from various birds of prey. Things did not go according to plan when this hawk wouldn't return to the handler. She tried luring it back but it just sat on a perch a few hundred yards away with no interest in returning. It finally came back and the show could continue.
This owl never ventured too far from the handlers glove which contained juicy morsels.
This juvenile eagle just sat on his handlers gloved hand and gave us all a look of disapproval.
Next up was the lumberjack competition. Careful boys. If your aim is a little off you will be known as 4 Toed Jack.
Followed by the ax throwing contest.
Then the log sawing competition.
No lumberjack competition would be complete with a race to the top. It wasn't even close.
Then the log rolling competition. Both of them got wet and one took a nasty fall.
As the show was winding down and we were all distracted someone from the crowd decided to get a better view.
Followed by a hand stand.
All planned of course as he was tethered to the guide wire but he did put on quite the show a couple hundred feet in the air.
Next up was a drive to the Capilano Suspension Bridge where Lori found a couple of friends to pose for pictures.
Neither of us are great with heights and given that the bridge is 460 feet long and 230 feet high with lots of bounce we were both griping the steel cable pretty tightly. We had lots of company with many others regretting their decision to cross the bridge.
Some great scenery on the other side including some unique lighting under the dark tree canopy.
A wildlife rescue had a display of some of their birds and this guy was too cute not to take a picture of.
There was also a tree top walk which I went on. Lori was saving her nerve for the walk back across the bridge.
Final stop was a Salmon Hatchery and fish ladder. Didn't get any real good shots although Lori got a few. That was it for day 2, or so we thought. We walked home and stopped for Pizza along the way. When we got back to O Canada House we talked to the Chef and he asked if we were going to the fireworks show that night. But more on that in the next post.
